Breast Cancer

Signs of breast cancer include:

• A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area
• A change in the size or shape of the breast
• Spontaneous nipple discharge or tenderness
• An inverted nipple
• Ridges or pitting on the breast (resembling an orange peel)
• A change in the look or feel of the breast, areola or nipple (such as temperature, swelling, redness or a scaly feel)

Breast Imaging or mammogram is an x-ray of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast diseases. There are two different types of mammograms. The most common is a screening mammogram, used to detect small growths in the breast, even before they can be felt. A diagnostic mammogram is used to diagnose breast abnormalities, such as a lump, pain, nipple thickening or a change in breast size or shape, which may be detected in a screening mammogram.

Personalized attention

The interdisciplinary team of surgeons and experts includes a specially trained oncology nurse navigator who helps patients coordinate all aspects of care, including surgery, radiation and medical therapy, if necessary.

Convenient, centralized expertise

The Breast Center is located in the Sherman and Gloria H. Cohen Pavilion at 77 Lafayette Place in Greenwich. Board certified surgeons have offices on the same floor. Patients who require surgery can have the procedure done across the street at Greenwich Hospital.

The Bendheim Cancer Center, also located in the Cohen Pavilion, offers a full range of outpatient diagnostic and treatment services, including radiation therapy, medical therapies and laboratory services. Women newly diagnosed with breast cancer at the Breast Center can immediately begin tapping the resources and experts at the Bendheim Cancer Center. Patients who qualify have access to a variety of clinical trials.
