Diagnosis

When combined with a detailed medical history, allergy testing can identify the specific triggers for an allergic reaction. Diagnostic testing may include:

• Skin Testing: Helps identify the substances causing allergic systems. Small amounts of solutions that contain different allergens are injected under the skin or applied with a small scratch. A reaction appears as a small red area.
• Blood Tests: Measure IgE (allergic) antibodies to specific allergens in the blood. The blood test most commonly used is called RAST (radioallergosorbent test). Blood tests may be used when skin tests cannot be performed.

Treatment

Treatment options for allergies vary depending on the type of allergy and the severity of a patient’s reaction. Options may include:

• Prevention education (avoidance)
• Decongestants and antihistamines
• Nasal sprays
• Eye drops
• Corticosteroids
• Allergy shots (allergy immunotherapy)
• Asthma treatment
