Diverse case mix comes from Greenwich and surrounding Fairfield and Westchester counties. Most social and ethnic groups represented. Additional unusual cases are also seen during Yale electives at their tertiary care sites.
Formally affiliated since 1975. Over 130 contact sessions each year between Yale faculty and Greenwich Hospital residents. Up to five months of elective time (over 3 years) may be scheduled at Yale. Yale students rotate at Greenwich Hospital.
Greenwich Hospital has been nationally recognized for Epic, a state-of-the-art medical information system. Over 700 fully networked, Internet-connected workstations are located throughout the hospital, in each call room, the Outpatient Center and the resident lounge. Information systems support staff available 24 hours/ day. Formal training provided to all house staff.
Minimized through careful attention to work loads,call schedules and learning environment. Evaluated by confidential survey twice yearly. Documented low emotional distress, high learning environment and work load satisfaction. Resources are available through the program and institution to address resident wellness.
Only residents are to write orders on their patients. Resident surveys demonstrate satisfaction with the level of decision-making autonomy provided by the program.
Full Time Faculty
The Program Director and four additional faculty dedicate all their professional time to the education and welfare of the house staff. The faculty is 100% board certified in Internal Medicine, two with additional certification in Geriatrics.
A hospitalist service provides direct patient care and teaching for private and unassigned patients.
Ancillary support services 24 hours a day. Comfortable on-call rooms with lockers, networked computers and television. Subsidized housing (free for categorical residents & subsidized rate for one-year preliminary residents, subject to utilities and applicable imputed taxes). Subsidized day care. Lunch provided at teaching conferences. Monthly meal stipend for overnight calls. Financial support for electives taken at Yale, research endeavors and board review courses.
Greenwich Hospital actively incorporates simulation as an education strategy. SYN:APSE simulation center, as part of Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), provides hands-on training to prepare trainees for the challenges of complex medical management. The facility has high-fidelity mannequins with sophisticated audiovisual systems and multiple camera views, in addition to simultaneous on- screen viewing of video and patient vital signs. The debriefing is designed to facilitate discussion and encourage participants to evaluate their own performance.
EBM is stressed throughout the curriculum, which covers all major Internal Medicine topics.
