Greenwich, CT (Oct. 25, 2017) – Greenwich Hospital surgeon Ashutosh Kaul, MD received the Cutting Edge Award for excellence in medical research at the 2017 Doctors of Distinction ceremony this week.

An internationally renowned surgeon known for his surgical skills and bedside manner, Dr. Kaul is director of Bariatric Surgery at Greenwich Hospital. He is a board-certified surgeon specializing in advanced laparoscopic surgery with a focus on foregut and bariatric surgery.

Dr. Kaul has been involved in researching the effects of metabolic surgery on the health of patients for more than 17 years in collaboration with physicians at New York Medical College.

“Obesity has become the biggest health care issue effecting our country. Over 1,000 people die from obesity and obesity-related illnesses every day,” Dr. Kaul told the audience at the event.

Dr. Kaul’s research has proven the efficacy of bariatric surgeries in not only reducing weight, but also decreasing the occurrence of other co-morbid conditions such as diabetes (80 percent reduction), high blood pressure (70 percent improvement), arthritis (reduction of symptoms), sleep apnea (80 percent reduction), heart disease and high cholesterol levels.

In addition to his Greenwich Hospital duties, Dr. Kaul is a professor of surgery and program director of the minimally invasive surgery fellowship program at New York Medical College and director of minimally invasive and robotic surgery at Westchester Medical Center.

Doctors of Distinction was sponsored by Westfair Communications on Oct. 24 to honor physicians for their “dedication, expertise, accomplishments and compassionate care.”
