Gerald Portman, MD, is a urologist who specializes in treating cancers of the bladder, kidney, prostate, and testes.

In addition to general urologic care and men’s health issues, he has expertise in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and in managing kidney stone disease with minimally invasive and robotic surgery techniques.

Dr. Portman says he was drawn to urology during his medical training after watching the work of a mentor. “I really liked the interesting types of surgeries and procedures that urologists do, as well as helping people with a breadth of different diseases and conditions,” he says.

With the minimally invasive surgical techniques he uses, Dr. Portman says patients recover more quickly with less blood loss, less pain, and shorter lengths of stay in the hospital. For many procedures, including many for kidney stones, patients can go home the same day.

No matter the case, Dr. Portman says he makes it a point to reassure patients that they are not alone. “If a patient is coming to me and needs surgery, I assure them that we’ve helped a lot of people through similar conditions,” he says. “I also make myself easily available to them with any questions they may have.”

The best part of his job, Dr. Portman says, is that every day is different. “I also find it very rewarding to help patients with these difficult diagnoses, especially if we are able to cure them,” he says.
