Studies show COVID-19 patients in their 30s and 40s experience blood clots and strokes at a higher rate than same-age patients who don’t have the disease.
According to Advisory Board, a healthcare research organization, three large U.S. medical centers have found a link between COVID-19 and strokes. Th e studies show strokes occurring among patients in their 30s and 40s, including some who were unaware they had contracted the coronavirus or were experiencing only mild symptoms.
“Patients infected with the virus seem to develop increased tendency to form clots, leading to severe strokes in some cases,” said Paul Lleva, MD, a vascular neurologist and director of Stroke services at Greenwich Hospital.
“Due to the heightened propensity to increased clot formation, COVID-19 patients are at risk for cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and stroke. People of all ages should immediately seek emergency care if they experience any sign of stroke. Even severe strokes are treatable if caught early,” he said.
