Stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is restricted, usually the result of clogged arteries leading to the brain.
When the brain is starved of oxygen-rich blood, damage begins to occur within minutes. That’s why taking immediate action is crucial.
Stroke symptoms appear suddenly and include numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg; confusion or trouble speaking; vision problems; a loss of balance or coordination; or an intense headache that comes out of nowhere.
Be FAST to identify a stroke:
Face: Does one side droop? Arms: Can the person raise both arms? Does one drift down? Speech: Is speech slurred? Can the person repeat a
phrase clearly? Time: Call 9-1-1 so medication can be administered in time to stop further damage and increase the chances for a healthy recovery. Never hesitate to call 9-1-1.
