Freedom Riders raise money for cancer care

The Greenwich Hospital Freedom Riders

The Greenwich Hospital Freedom Riders raised nearly $8,000 during the Ride in the Garden as part of the Closer to Free campaign to raise funds for Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center in Greenwich.

Sixteen employees took turns riding spin bicycles while maintaining all safety protocols. Closer to Free went virtual for a second year in a row due to the pandemic. The Greenwich event was organized by team captain Heather Studwell, Oncology Survivorship coordinator, for a second year as a creative alternative to crowd-based COVID restrictions. YMCA of Greenwich generously donated 10 bikes for the ride, and two outstanding spin instructors donated their time. Since 2011, riders, volunteers, sponsors and supporters have generated more than $20 million for the lifesaving and life-changing work of Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center.
