Lactation Program

Whether a mother chooses to breastfeed or bottle-feed her baby, our maternity staff provides support and guidance, both before and after childbirth.

Breastfeeding moms receive support and advice from lactation experts who are available to answer questions, listen to concerns, and provide instruction in breastfeeding techniques.

Greenwich Hospital’s lactation consultants are registered nurses who are board certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. The IBLCE is recognized worldwide for its rigorous training standards in this important healthcare specialty.

Breastfeeding is also promoted through the hospital’s prenatal classes and parenting support groups.

Comprehensive Support

Mothers and mothers-to-be who intend to breastfeed can take advantage of a variety of resources:

  • Prenatal breastfeeding classes for moms and families
  • Full-time maternity RNs certified in lactation consulting (IBCLC)
  • 24-hour in-hospital lactation consultation
  • 24-hour lactation phone line
  • Support for working moms who wish to breastfeed when they return to work
  • Pediatricians, neonatologists and nurses who promote breastfeeding as the healthiest way for baby to be fed
  • For mothers choosing to bottle-feed, the staff provides advice that includes how to mix formula, what type of formula to use and how to hold the baby.

Postpartum Visits for Breastfeeding Mothers

Support continues for breastfeeding mothers with a postpartum visit after mother and baby are discharged from the hospital. Certified lactation nurses are available to answer questions, address concerns and show them “how to” techniques.

Postpartum Visits: 9:30 am - 3 pm

Why Breastfeed?

The advantages of breastfeeding for both mother and baby are well documented:

  • Breastfeeding provides all the nutrients a baby needs for healthy growth and development.
  • Babies who are breastfed get fewer diseases, become less sick when they do get ill, and are less likely to develop allergies.
  • Breastfeeding is convenient: no formula to mix or bottles to warm.
  • Mothers who breastfeed may reduce their risk for breast and ovarian cancer.
  • Most importantly, breastfeeding promotes a physically close and emotionally nurturing bond between mother and baby.
