Urogynecology / Incontinence

Pelvic floor disorders are caused by weakening or injury to the muscles and connective tissue within the pelvic cavity that hold the bladder, uterus, bowel, and rectum in place. The urogynecologists at Greenwich Hospital are expert at treating these disorders, providing patients with compassionate and effective care to correct and relieve symptoms.

Symptoms

As a result of childbirth or normal aging, many women suffer from one or more pelvic floor disorders. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and include urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence and/or pelvic organ prolapse. Many women find these symptom are disruptive to daily activities and their quality of life.

Specialized Treatment for Incontinence

Greenwich Hospital surgeons specialize in urethral sling surgery, a surgical technique that is very effective at correcting stress incontinence resulting from a weakened pelvic floor.

In this type of surgery, the urethra is lifted back to a normal position using a sling made of natural or synthetic material. The sling, which is attached to the abdominal wall, also creates pressure on the urethra to control incontinence.

Sling surgery generally requires 2-3 days of hospitalization.
