Kris Knerr, RN, York Street Campus Adult Emergency Department, was honored for compassion and kindness on behalf of two patients from the same family. Knerr was caring for an ED patient on comfort measures. Upon learning that the man’s son was an inpatient on another floor, Knerr arranged to have the two brought together for a final time before the father passed away.

Sarah Le Saux, RN, MICU 9 and 10, and Candace Ballantoni, RN, Labor and Delivery, were honored for collaborative, compassionate, patient-centered care during a difficult and stressful situation. Le Saux’s patient was intubated and sedated due to an inflammatory response that led to respiratory failure. Shortly after being placed on a ventilator, the patient went into active labor in the MICU. Delivering the baby required the expertise of nurses from both units to help the patient breathe through contractions with damaged lungs. Le Saux and Ballantoni worked in tandem to provide support, encouragement and expert care to the terrified patient throughout labor, delivery and the immediate postpartum period. In a situation where they each found themselves in unfamiliar territory, Le Saux and Ballantoni supported each other in a way that truly exemplifies the importance of teamwork on the patient experience.

All employees, physicians and volunteers are eligible for the monthly PEACE recognition. Send nominations to: [email protected].
