Greenwich Hospital celebrates “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day”

Greenwich, CT – Seven-year-old Abraham Joseph of Long Island, NY, could barely contain his enthusiasm as he took part in Greenwich Hospital’s sixth annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

“What’s my favorite part of the day? The power generators! They were amazing,” said Joseph, a first-grader whose mother is a nurse at the hospital.

Joseph was among the 70 children of Greenwich Hospital employees who enjoyed a day of interactive activities, clinical demonstrations and behind-the-scenes tours showcasing a variety of hospital operations and careers.

Children toured the physical plant and the data center, viewed the inside of an ambulance, and learned about radiology, physical medicine, pharmacy, the emergency department and other medical specialties through hands-on activities. Officers from the Greenwich Police Department and paramedics from Greenwich Emergency Medical Service also met with the kids to explain their roles in the community and give them a chance to explore a police van and ambulance.

“Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day has become a wonderful tradition for our staff and their families. We are proud to offer such a unique opportunity for parents and children to connect despite busy home and work lives,” said Melissa Turner, senior vice president of Human Resources for Greenwich and Bridgeport Hospitals. “Some children point to this event for finding a newfound career interest in medicine!”

Norman G. Roth, Greenwich Hospital president, kicked off the festivities which was open to children from kindergarten through 12th grade. The day also included breakfast and lunch.

Josh Forler said bringing his daughter, five-year-old Anna, to Greenwich Hospital was special. “It’s exciting for her to see how our staff works together to take care of patients and provide help and support,” said Forler, who is director of Continuous Improvement for Yale New Haven Health, which includes Greenwich Hospital.

Jodie Boldrighini has been bringing her daughter, seven-year-old Molly, to the event for the past three years. Boldrighini is director of Occupational Health for Yale New Haven Health.

“It’s great to see the sense of pride the kids have when they talk about their parents working in a hospital,” said Boldrighini, who led a group of seven-year-olds. “It’s also good for them to see all the different departments that are needed to run a hospital.”

During a demonstration on hand hygiene, Carolyn Bender, a nurse with the Infection Prevention Department at Greenwich Hospital, uses a special light to show the children the germs on their hands.

Greenwich Police Department officers made a special trip to Greenwich Hospital to give the children a tour of the police van.
