Cancer Support Services

Greenwich Hospital team understands how challenging a cancer diagnosis can be for the patient, family members, friends and caregivers. Greenwich Hospital offers a wide range of counseling, services, support groups and more for cancer patients and their loved ones. Many of these services are free of charge.

Nurse Navigation and Personalized Care

Our Oncology Nurse Navigators are here to offer individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers. They provide education and resources to facilitate informed decision-making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum.

Free Mammograms

Free mammograms are available to eligible women through the Greenwich Hospital Partnership for Breast Health. You may qualify if you are 40 or older, are low-income and have no health insurance. Available by appointment at the Greenwich Hospital Breast Center, located in the Bendheim Cancer Center, 77 Lafayette Place (across the street from the hospital). Supported by the Breast Cancer Alliance in cooperation with Greenwich Hospital and the Greenwich Radiology Group. Appointment required: 203-863-3031

Prostate Cancer Screenings

Through our Community Health programs, Greenwich Hospital offers prostate cancer screenings to men with limited financial resources. Men should begin screening for prostate cancer at age 50. African-American males and men with a family history of prostate cancer should start at age 45. Please call for information: 203-863-4444


Cancer Counseling

An experienced psychotherapist offers counseling and stress management to help patients and families cope with cancer and its impact on their lives. Information on support resources and educational programs is also available. Provided by Community Health at the Smilow Specialty Physician Suite 3-3200 at Greenwich Hospital. When a Parent Has Cancer

An experienced cancer counselor discusses topics such as explaining your illness to your children, handling their questions and worries. Participants learn how children can grow from, rather than be hurt by, being part of a family affected by cancer. Books and other resources are available. This weekly service is sponsored by Community Health at Greenwich Hospital. Preregistration required: 203-863-3704. FREE.


Pre-Mastectomy Consultation

Breast cancer patients who will undergo mastectomy surgery can meet one-on-one with a registered nurse to ask questions and understand what to expect before and after surgery. Please call for an appointment: 203-863-4250. FREE.

Pre-Lumpectomy Consultation

Breast cancer patients who will undergo lumpectomy surgery can meet one-on-one with a registered nurse to ask questions and learn what to expect before and after surgery. Please call for an appointment: 203-863-4250. FREE.

Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster

This is a 75-minute consultation with a certified registered nurse to help patients learn mind/body techniques to relax before surgery and visualize recovery. Patients will also receive the book, Prepare For Surgery, Heal Faster, and a guided visualization CD. Research shows that this method of preparing for surgery helps people significantly reduce anxiety, use 23-50% less pain medication and heal faster. To schedule an appointment, call 203-863-3222.


Cancer patients can meet with a dietitian to discuss nutrition issues during treatment and beyond, and get tips on healthy eating. For information, call 203 863-3559.

Cancer Pain Management

Coping with the pain often associated with cancer at all stages of the disease can take a toll on patients and their caregivers. Effective, customized pain management can allow patients to continue with treatment and improve their quality of life. Decreasing the levels of pain and increasing comfort can also boost a patient’s immune system, ward off infection and potentially increase the body’s natural defense again tumor progression. The physicians at the Greenwich Hospital Center for Pain Management offer support and guidance on pain management specific to each individual's diagnosis. I Can Cope Cancer Series

This free educational program for cancer patients and their caregivers, family and friends helps dispel cancer myths with straightforward information and answers to cancer-related questions. Offered periodically in partnership with the American Cancer Society. FREE.

Prostate Education Forum

Look Good...Feel Better

This interactive program offers information and helpful tips about skin care, makeup, wigs and scarves to help female cancer patients look and feel their best. Offered quarterly in partnership with the American Cancer Society. FREE.

Spa Night and Eyebrow Clinic

This evening of makeup and fun is for women undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Participants learn how deal with the loss of eyebrows, and get complimentary pampering from Greenwich Hospital’s Healing Touch volunteers. Held quarterly. FREE.

Self-Hypnosis Skills for Cancer Patients

Relaxation, visualization, and imagery are proven ways to access the body's capacity for healing. Self-hypnosis uses these tools for pain reduction, anxiety, side effects of treatments and general well-being. Conducted by a Greenwich Hospital nurse and cancer counselor who has advanced training in hypnosis and is a clinical member of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis Initial consultation is required: 203-863-4444. Healing Touch at Bendheim Cancer Center

This holistic, energy-based program complements the care of radiation and chemotherapy patients while they receive treatment at the Bendheim Cancer Center. Soothing techniques performed by trained volunteers help patients relax to facilitate healing. To request this service, speak with your nurse when you come for treatment. FREE.

Massage Therapy 

Therapeutic massage reduces stress, muscle tension and pain, promoting a state of balance and relaxation. Physician clearance required. For information, call 203-863-3222. FREE.

Music Therapy

Music helps patients relax, reduce pain, alleviate fear, and lessen anxieties and side effects of cancer treatments. A Music and Meditation deep relaxation session is offered every Tuesday from 12:30 - 1pm in the Greenwich Hospital chapel. This is free to patients and visitors. Nutrition and Cancer

Greenwich Hospital patients and their caregivers will get helpful, healthy hints on maintaining weight during and after treatment. FREE.

Support Groups 

Caregiver Café

This drop-in monthly group gives caregivers the opportunity to get support, connect with others and develop coping and relaxation strategies to help them manage the stress of supporting a loved one through cancer. No pre-registration is required; drop-ins are welcome. Coffee and muffins are served. Group meets the first Thursday of the month at 11 am in the Infusion Unit Library in the Bendheim Cancer Center. Living with Cancer Support Group

This monthly support group is for adults living with cancer and in treatment. An opportunity for patients to develop coping and stress-reduction strategies to help them manage their illness while connecting with other individuals going through a similar experience. Post-Treatment Breast Cancer Support Group

Facilitated by the Oncology Social Worker, this group offers individuals the opportunity to gain knowledge and support through the post-treatment phase. It meets monthly on Tuesdays. Pre-registration is required. Call 203-863-3704 to sign up and for more information. FREE

Cancer Prevention & Wellness

Community Health at Greenwich Hospital is the hospital’s community outreach department. It offers wellness education programs and cancer screenings to men and women.
