Greenwich Hospital launches new era with advanced cancer-fighting tool

Greenwich Hospital has launched a new era in cancer treatment with the acquisition of the TrueBeam radiation therapy system that offers advanced speed and accuracy leading to shorter treatment times and less patient discomfort.

“This technology positions Greenwich Hospital at the forefront in the fight against cancer,” said Ashwatha Narayana, MD, a radiation oncologist. “Our goal is to provide patients with the highest level of cancer care close to home.”

The advanced radiation therapy system can treat cancer anywhere in the body, including lung, breast, prostate and head and neck region.

The TrueBeam linear accelerator from Varian was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Smilow Cancer Hospital Greenwich Hospital campus at 77 Lafayette Place in Greenwich.

This equipment treats moving targets quickly and accurately, leading to shorter treatment times while reducing the possibility of movement during therapy and patient discomfort. It features a larger field size, streamlined imaging and patient positioning tools that enable more flexibility.

The TrueBeam platform is a fully integrated system for specialized procedures like image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Its automated workflow uses intuitive visual cues to enhance safety.
