Greenwich, CT (March 23, 2026) – Greenwich Hospital has earned the prestigious Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for the third time, placing it among approximately 10 percent of the more than 6,000 hospitals nationwide, and one of only seven in Connecticut, to achieve this distinguished honor.
Greenwich Hospital received its initial designation in 2016 and was awarded redesignation status in 2021, making it one of four hospitals in the state to achieve designation three or more times.
Magnet recognition is the gold standard for nursing excellence and is a factor when the public evaluates health care organizations. U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care. The designation is the highest honor for nursing excellence that any hospital can achieve. The Magnet Recognition Program also recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care and innovations in professional practice. Magnet appraisers look closely at four areas of nursing operation and development, the hospital's nursing leaders and how they empower nursing staff; the hospital's culture of safety; the quality of nursing practice; and the best practices nurses discover and share to deliver safe patient care.
With this designation, Greenwich Hospital was also awarded 10 Magnet exemplars, which are concepts practices or programs worthy of imitation that highlight excellence in nursing practice and lead to positive outcomes. In 2021, Greenwich Hospital was credited with six exemplars.
“This accomplishment reflects the outstanding teamwork, perseverance and clinical skill our nurses and care teams demonstrate every single day,” said Anna Cerra, DNP, RN, chief nursing officer at Greenwich Hospital. “We are extremely proud to be among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized for their unwavering commitment to nursing excellence.”
“Remarkable dedication and professionalism are what define Greenwich Hospital, and this third designation from Magnet proves just that,” said Bob Blenderman, president of Greenwich Hospital. “This recognition is grounded in the shared belief in our entire hospital, yet it is our nurses, guided by their leadership and innovation, who truly drive our Magnet journey forward.”
To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.
The designation lasts four years. Yale New Haven Hospital earned its fourth designation on February 18, and Bridgeport Hospital received its first designation in December 2025.
“This represents a major milestone for our health system,” said Ena Williams, PhD, RN, chief nurse executive for Yale New Haven Health. “It showcases the culture of excellence that defines Yale New Haven Health where we support the autonomous practice, recruitment and retention of exceptional nurses, elevate the care we deliver and drive improvements in quality and safety for the communities we proudly serve.”
