Greenwich Hospital earns "A" grade for patient safety from national watchdog group

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

Greenwich, CT – Greenwich Hospital has earned an "A" grade as one of the safest hospitals in the United States, according to The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog group.

“This top grade reflects our ongoing commitment to create the safest environment for patients and staff,” said Norman G. Roth, president of Greenwich Hospital. “Our goal is to foster a culture of safety through daily safety huddles with senior staff, unit-based safety coaches and hospital-wide quality safety rounds conducted by our leaders.”

Greenwich Hospital has a long tradition of patient safety. For example, all staff, physicians and volunteers complete “high reliability” training adapted from the aviation and other high-risk industries. Another safety initiative includes a video falls risk monitoring program, which has garnered national attention and reduced inpatient falls at the hospital by 44 percent.

Only four hospitals in Connecticut received an "A" for patient safety. The Leapfrog Group designation marks the second time this year that Greenwich Hospital is recognized for patient safety. In March, Greenwich Hospital also received the 2016 Women’s Choice Award for Patient Safety.

The Leapfrog Group assigned letter grades to more than 2,500 hospitals nationwide to provide the most complete picture of patient safety in the United States health care system.
