Greenwich Hospital earns Five Star Rating from CMS

Thursday, June 10, 2021

Greenwich, CT (June 10, 2021) – Greenwich Hospital has earned a five-star hospital rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) – the highest distinction offered by the federal agency. The overall star rating is based on how well a hospital performs across different areas of quality, such as treating heart attacks and pneumonia, readmission rates and safety of care.

The CMS star rating system, launched in 2016, assigns stars based on 48 measures in the following five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care. CMS rated over 4,500 hospitals from one to five stars, with five representing the highest quality rating. Of 4,586 hospitals, only 13.5%, or 455 hospitals, received five stars.

“I am extremely proud of the team at Greenwich Hospital for achieving this five-star rating,” said Diane Kelly, president Greenwich Hospital. “This is further confirmation of what we already know – our physicians, nurses and staff have created the safest environment for our patients and deliver exceptional care each and every day.”

Found on Medicare's Care Compare website, the ratings provide consumers with a simple way to compare hospitals' quality and performance. Greenwich Hospital’s score was driven by strong performance in mortality – the rate of patient survival 30 post-hospitalization for common conditions. Another measure tracked by CMS where Greenwich Hospital excelled was Timely and Effective Care, which measures how often or how quickly hospitals provide care that research shows get the best results for patients.
