Yale New Haven Health named as “Top Performer in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality”

Friday, March 31, 2017

New Haven, CT (March 31, 2017) – Yale New Haven Health has been recognized as a “Top Performer in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization.

The findings were part of HRC Foundation’s 10th edition of the Healthcare Equity Index, an annual survey that encourages equal care for LGBTQ Americans by evaluating inclusive policies and practices related to LGBTQ patients, visitors and employees.

Yale New Haven Health earned top marks in meeting non-discrimination criteria that demonstrates its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBTQ patients and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing quality health care.

Yale New Haven Health includes Greenwich, Bridgeport, Yale New Haven and Lawrence + Memorial hospitals in Connecticut and Westerly Hospital in Rhode Island.

“This recognition reflects our belief that every individual – regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or income level – should have access to high quality health care and be treated with dignity and compassion. We take pride in being an equal opportunity employer and providing ongoing staff training to meet the needs of our LGBTQ patients and their families,” said Kevin Myatt, senior vice president and chief Human Resources officer for Yale New Haven Health.

Organizations designated as Top Performers in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality were recognized for implementing LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices in four areas: patient-centered care, patient services and support, fully inclusive employee benefits and policies, and patient and community engagement. This was the first time the Healthcare Equality Index awarded numerical scores to organizations.
