Greenwich Hospital’s Auxiliary celebrated 75 years of service with a significant gift to the hospital during a recent annual luncheon held for both the Auxiliary and Volunteer Services.
The luncheon also honored a collective 35,900 hours of service by the hospital’s volunteers over the past year.
Auxiliary president Calvin Murray presented the hospital with a $650,000 check to support children’s services at the hospital – $150,000 more than the anticipated $500,000 donation due to increased sales at the Thrift Shop and Hospital Gift Shop.
“Not everyone I know can do what you do,” said Murray, addressing the volunteers. “Your work takes time, discipline and heart.” Murray also shared that the Greenwich Hospital volunteer knitters are 37 strong and since their inception have knitted more than 7,800 items for hospital patients to keep them warm while undergoing treatment.
Greenwich Hospital President Bob Blenderman thanked the volunteers, sharing that, “My experience volunteering as a child taught me how important volunteerism is. In the changing work of health care, this amazing group brings the humanistic side to our hospital, and your dedication and pride is palpable.”
Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo presented a proclamation naming the day as Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer Appreciation Day.
Volunteers with 10, 20 or 30 years of service were recognized at the luncheon. For the first time, the Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to a team: the Healing Touch volunteers, who spent more than 2,000 hours rounding on more than 1,300 patients, providing comfort at the bedside through gentle touch and relaxation techniques.
