Aprille Young was diagnosed with a severe form of cancer, which led to her prolonged hospitalization and end-of-life care at Greenwich Hospital. Throughout treatment, she remained resilient, hopeful and determined to walk again.
Hospital leadership received a letter from Patricia Young, Aprille’s mother, outlining her experience and reflecting on the individuals and teams who cared for Aprille. The Young family expressed profound gratitude for the exemplary medical, emotional and human support received.
Over 75 consecutive days, the family observed an unparalleled commitment to quality care, with over 50 individuals across all departments going above and beyond. From attentive nurses and aides to insightful physicians, therapists, hospitality staff and spiritual care providers – each person played a vital role in making a difficult journey feel humane, dignified and full of heart, according to Patricia Young.
The letter highlighted specific staff members who demonstrated professionalism, empathy, communication, leadership and comfort, and created a nurturing and safe environment that helped Aprille feel seen, heard and valued. The family was particularly moved by acts of kindness such as late-night check-ins, staff singing or offering a calming presence and proactive advocacy during moments of crisis.
