Nitya Bakshi, MBBS (a medical degree awarded in countries outside the U.S.), specializes in pediatric hematology and oncology, focusing on the care of children and young adults with sickle cell disease.
"Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder that is inherited," explains Dr. Bakshi. It primarily affects individuals of African descent and is characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, which can cause red blood cells to become rigid and shaped like a sickle. This can lead to blockages in blood flow and result in chronic pain, anemia, and other complications.
Dr. Bakshi emphasizes personalized pain management strategies for patients with sickle cell disease, aiming to reduce pain and enhance overall health. “The goal of treatment is to have as healthy a life as possible,” she says.
As an associate professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Bakshi's research focuses on understanding chronic pain in sickle cell disease.
Dr. Bakshi received her medical degree from Christian Medical College in India and completed a master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
