Patrick Oh, MD, is a radiation oncologist whose expertise spans the full breadth of radiation oncology, with a particular focus on treating lung cancers and genitourinary malignancies such as prostate cancer. He also has significant experience in managing hematologic, skin, and metastatic cancers, and in using advanced radiological techniques such as stereotactic body radiation therapy (precisely targeting tumors with high doses of radiation), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (killing cancer cells with high-dose energy beams customized to match the shape of the cancer), and image-guided radiation therapy (in which images help increase the accuracy of the radiation). He works with a team to develop individualized treatment and support patients through a challenging time in their lives.
Dr. Oh chose this field because “it is a uniquely innovative field that integrates advanced technology with cutting-edge biomedical research, while also requiring thoughtful, compassionate patient care. It is highly collaborative, bringing together multiple specialties to provide the most comprehensive treatment for each patient.”
As an assistant professor of therapeutic radiology at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Oh conducts research on minimizing radiation-induced toxicities, especially those affecting the heart and lungs, and expanding the applications of radiation therapy across various cancer types. He is also committed to medical education, mentoring residents and medical students with a focus on communication and patient-centered care.
Working with patients is Dr. Oh’s favorite part of the job. “I enjoy listening to their stories, understanding their unique circumstances, and engaging them as active participants in the decision-making and treatment planning process,” he says. “I reassure patients by acknowledging that while nothing in medicine is ever guaranteed, I focus on understanding what matters most to them and shaping a treatment plan that aligns with their goals of care.”
In the end, he says, “It is a privilege to build those relationships and to help patients feel empowered and supported throughout their care.”
Dr. Oh received his medical degree from Stony Brook University School of Medicine and completed his residency in radiation oncology at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he also served as chief resident.
