Two Greenwich Hospital volunteers have received the prestigious President’s Call to Service Award in recognition of completing 4,000 hours or more of service.
Greenwich residents Brenda Dehmel and Nancy Wells were honored during the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary’s 65th Annual Meeting on Sept. 30. They will receive a certificate, pin and letter from President Barack Obama for their service as volunteers at Greenwich Hospital.
“Our volunteers are one of our most treasured resources,” said Norman G. Roth, president of Greenwich Hospital. “The amount of service they provide to our patients each and every day is remarkable. They all play a big part in making Greenwich Hospital such a wonderful place and making the Greenwich Hospital experience outstanding.”
Sally Lochner, Auxiliary president, noted that the Auxiliary financially supports the hospital in many ways. It completed the first year of a five-year pledge to donate $1 million to benefit cardiovascular services at Greenwich Hospital. Cardiovascular services include interventional cardiology, emergency angioplasty, vascular surgery and cardiac rehabilitation.
In addition, the Auxiliary expects to generate more than $500,000 from the hospital gift shop (located in the main lobby) and the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop at 199 Hamilton Ave. The Auxiliary’s Annual Fund raised $8,380, with matching corporate grants of $1,100. It also funds annual scholarships for four high school graduates studying for healthcare careers.
Formed in 1906 and originally known as the Greenwich Hospital volunteer corps, the Auxiliary has 625 volunteers (479 adults and 146 juniors) who contributed 52,780 hours of service to the hospital during the past fiscal year.
During the Sept. 30 meeting, the Auxiliary bid farewell to John Toner, who is leaving the board to pursue election to Greenwich town government. Toner, who has contributed 3,200 hours of service to the hospital since 2001, will continue volunteering in the Medical Library. Lochner also welcomed David Denison and Jane Sims to the Auxiliary board.
“Greenwich Hospital is extremely proud and humbled by the amazing work of its auxiliary and volunteer force,” said Stacey Green, director of volunteer services.
