September was NICU awareness month, dedicated to acknowledging the challenges, honoring the experiences, and providing support for babies and their families impacted by a stay in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and the medical professionals who treat and care for them.
To honor the occasion, Greenwich Hospital’s NICU team set up an information table Sept. 16 to educate staff and visitors about the invaluable service they provide. “We have an incredible team which includes RNs, APPs, neonatologists, occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, nursing education staff and nursing leadership,” said Vanessa Maisonave, RN, NICU assistant nurse manager.
The GH NICU team cares for infants born as early as 26 weeks gestation and older. They can intubate infants if needed, place central lines and chest tubes, administer medications and blood products and care for critically ill babies.
