Outpatient Physiatry

People who suffer with bone, joint, muscle and nerve problems can often get better without surgery by consulting with a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation known as a physiatrist. Physiatrists are medical doctors that treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. Physiatrists facilitate physiologic adaptation to disability to prevent lifelong complications or future deterioration secondary to disabling conditions. The goal of the physiatrist is to provide non-surgical medical care to maximize a patient’s physical, biological, psychological, social, and vocational potential. A physiatrist should be consulted when pain, weakness, or disability is preventing a patient from achieving an independent lifestyle and/or their full potential.

Physiatrists use a comprehensive approach and a variety of techniques including:

  • Acupuncture
  • Direct referrals and communication to medical/surgical subspecialists when needed
  • Direct referrals to physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech and language pathology
  • Imaging
  • Lymphedema therapy
  • Medications
  • Trigger Point Injections
