Overview

The Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides structured, evidencebased behavioral health treatment for adults who need more support than weekly outpatient therapy, but do not require inpatient or partial hospitalization care. The program is designed to help participants stabilize symptoms, build coping skills and develop a clear plan for ongoing recovery.

About the Adult IOP

Who can benefit from IOP?

Our program treats patients aged 18 years and older, and is beneficial for:

  • Individuals experiencing moderate-to-severe depression and anxiety
  • People who need structured therapeutic intervention
  • Those transitioning from inpatient care to rehab who need step-down care to maintain and continue progress
  • People looking to enhance their skills in coping and emotional regulation

The IOP may not be suitable for individuals who require more intensive, 24-hour care or supervision. Those who may not be appropriate for this program include:

  • Individuals in immediate crisis
  • Those with severe substance abuse or addiction issues who may need detoxification or residential treatment
  • Individuals with acute psychosis, mania or severe cognitive impairments
  • Individuals seeking treatment focused on a primary eating disorder
  • Individuals seeking trauma-focused treatment

What you can expect

Patients come to the clinic three days per week (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday), for three hours each day, and participate in group-based therapy sessions incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to learn structured skills to better cope with stressors.

Patients meet with licensed clinicians to develop individualized treatment plans and our board-certified psychiatric professionals, including psychiatrists and advanced practice registered nurses, for medication management. All patients are seen for a diagnostic evaluation prior to enrolling in the program.

Our program has two specific in-person treatment tracks:

  • Mood and Anxiety IOP: Provides group therapy for individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorders, mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder), and personality disorders.
  • Dual-Diagnosis IOP: Group therapy for individuals with both mood and substance use disorders.

Treatment Schedule

Rolling admission allows participants to begin treatment as soon as clinically appropriate. Typical length of treatment is 8 weeks (about 24 sessions).

Admission and Referrals

Referrals are accepted from hospitals, outpatient providers and community partners. Self-referrals are also accepted. Call 203-357-9379 for more information.

We are participating providers for most insurance carriers. However, it is always recommended that patients check with their healthcare insurance company on the details of their behavioral health policy coverage.

Completion of an intake assessment is required to access treatment and determine appropriateness and track placement.

Providers may be asked to provide any appropriate clinical information by fax to 203-863-3811.
