Overview

The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Greenwich Hospital is a structured, therapeutic environment for individuals hoping to improve their mental health. The program is designed for those who need more support than traditional weekly therapy, but do not require 24-hour inpatient care. Patients in our IOP program can expect to receive evidence-based treatments for a range of psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma.

What you can expect

Patients come to the clinic three days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) for three hours each day. During a treatment day, patients participate in group sessions incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). The focus of groups is to learn structured skills to better cope with stressors. Patients will also meet with our licensed clinicians to develop individualized treatment plans and our board-certified psychiatric professionals including psychiatrists and advanced practice registered nurses for medication management. All patients are seen for a diagnostic evaluation prior to enrolling in the program.

Our program has two specific treatment tracks:

  • Mood & Anxiety Program: Provides group therapy for individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorders, mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder), and personality disorders.
  • Co-occurring Program: Group therapy for individuals with both mood and substance use disorders.

Who can benefit from IOP?

Our program treats patients ages 18 years and older. Patients may have been diagnosed with any number of conditions including anxiety disorders like panic disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. More generally, IOP is beneficial for:

  • Individuals experiencing moderate-to-severe depression and anxiety
  • People who need structured therapeutic intervention
  • Those transitioning from inpatient care or rehab who need step-down care to maintain and continue progress
  • People looking to enhance their skills in coping and emotional regulation

The IOP may not be suitable for individuals who require more intensive, 24-hour care or supervision. Those who may not be appropriate for this program include:

  • Individuals in immediate crisis
  • Those with severe substance abuse or addiction issues who may need detoxification or residential treatment
  • Individuals with acute psychosis, mania or severe cognitive impairments
  • Individuals seeking treatment focused on a primary eating disorder
  • Individuals seeking trauma-focused treatment

Referrals and Insurance

Psychiatry and Behavioral Health referrals are accepted from psychiatrists, therapists, primary care providers, and inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. Self-referrals are also accepted. Call 203-357-9379 for more information.

We are participating providers for most insurance carriers. However, it is always recommended that patients check with their health care insurance company on the details of their behavioral health policy coverage.
