Nutritional Counseling

Using evidence-based guidelines, registered dietitians offer counseling on the behavioral and nutritional changes necessary for weight and health management. Our dietitians provide you with both the skills and confidence to reach your nutrition goals.

Nutritional counseling starts with an initial assessment to determine specific areas in the patient’s current nutritional lifestyle that may act as barriers to the individual reaching her or his goals. The registered dietitian assesses current lifestyle, behaviors, eating patterns and preferences. After the initial assessment, the dietitian develops a practical nutrition plan and provides ongoing support in subsequent sessions, helping to ensure that individuals continue to move toward their goals effectively. Together, we set realistic and achievable goals to develop a plan for success. Our patients receive education to give them the skills and knowledge necessary to make independent decisions and lasting changes. The frequency of follow-up appointments will be decided upon by both the RD and the patient.

Nutritional counseling can be beneficial for:

  • Maintaining wellness and preventing future health problems
  • Weight loss and long-term maintenance
  • Cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, elevated cholesterol, and congestive heart disease
  • Endocrine diseases, such as diabetes, pre-diabetes, thyroid disorders, and polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and colitis
  • Autoimmune disorders, such as celiac disease
  • Food allergies
  • Renal diseases such as insufficiency, chronic failure, and transplantation
  • Pre- and post-bariatric surgery weight and nutrition management
  • Women’s health and nutritional deficits associated with pregnancy, anemia, menopause, and osteoporosis
  • Pediatric diseases

Cost and Coverage

Medicare covers outpatient nutritional counseling services for beneficiaries with a diagnosis of diabetes, chronic renal insufficiency/end-stage renal disease (non-dialysis renal disease) or post kidney transplant. Medicare Part B limits nutritional counseling services to 3 hours for the first calendar year and 2 hours of nutritional counseling each calendar year thereafter.

We will fax the required referral form to your physician. Upon receiving the completed form, we will immediately contact you to schedule an appointment for an initial assessment with a dietitian.

Please note that while a physician referral is required to receive nutritional services, it is not required to receive behavioral therapy. Self-referrals are welcome.

To make an appointment call 203-863-2939. We will respond during business hours.
