General Surgery

Anesthesia

Patients are given either local or general anesthesia, depending on the surgical procedure. Local anesthesia is used to numb a site where pain is likely to occur without changing the patient's awareness. General anesthesia renders patients unconscious and unaware during medical procedures, so they do not feel or remember anything that happens.
